in the 30+ years we’ve been together we’ve attended lots and lots of great concerts together. this week’s What Cheer Radio Hour was an attempt remember some of the most memorable ones and create a program of those artists we saw perform life together. this week’s song list follows, and read on beyond that for our stories and more information about seeing all of these artists in concert over the years. this will likely be Vol. 1 as it’s stirred up so many great memories of so much great music that there will be more to come.

hey y’all, Batboy Slim aka Chris Daltry here. i met my pardner in life back in 1994, soon after moving to Providence, RI from down South. we met at a job where nearly all of the employees were friends or acquaintances somehow connected to the Providence music scene, so we naturally all started hanging out together beyond work stuffs. the very first concert we attended was by a band we all knew in some way or another, Miracle Legion. me and the Mrs. weren’t dating yet but going to see this show was one of the first times we hung out together. Miracle Legion were also one of my favorite bands in high school. i’d seen them a few times when they’d toured down through Richmond, VA where i lived at the time, so seeing them again in approximately May 1994 was a real treat.

i first saw Calexico in 1996, also at the Met Cafe in Providence. it was a show put together for the Providence Phoenix honoring artists who had won their Best Music Poll categories. my band Purple Ivy Shadows had won “Best Album” and as a reward they had us open for Calexico and Dirty Three, both bands we loved. it might’ve been Calexico’s first real tour. me and the Mrs. have seen them several times over the years. the most memorable show was 3.24.04 while on a trip down to Northern Florida. we were staying in a sleepy horse country area and took a drive to the nearest college town, Gainesville, where we picked up their local free arts paper and saw that Calexico were playing at a small place called Common Grounds. the venue was so packed that the only place we could cram in and see the band was to sit on the bar. the stage was small and crammed to, with the band’s elaborate setup of vibes, upright bass, horn section, etc. somehow fitting in up there. sometimes a crowd makes the energy of a show happen, and this was one of those occasions.

both of us love the band X and have seen them a number of times over the years, but none were as exciting to us as seeing their country punk side project the Knitters play at the Paradise in Boston, MA. this band was made up of most of X in addition to Dave Alvin from the Blasters. they released just one album, 1985’s ‘Poor Little Critter On The Road,’ and since neither of us had been old enough to see them back then we jumped at the chance to catch them on May 3, 2007 at the Paradise. Dave Alvin once famously described their sound as if “the guys at Sun Records dropped LSD and made a record with Lead Belly and the Carter Family.”

Cheap Trick are a band we’ve seen exactly once and it was one of those shows that require no need to see another as it was so freaking great. the band had been booked to play a free outdoor show in Providence back on 12 June 1994 but the weather turned bad and word got out that things had been moved to the historic Strand Theater. no tickets were required, but it was first-come-first-served ’til it was at capacity. we got there in time for one of the best shows either of us has ever seen, one that was likely better inside this old venue.

and speaking of the Strand, we were also extremely lucky to have seen the one and only Johnny Cash there on 19 May 1996. i’m not sure how much the Man in Black toured later on in his career. i don’t think it was much. anyways, we jumped at the only opportunity we were given, and it’s seared into our collective memories. it was so good. and train imagery was a big part of it. maybe that’s why we love taking trips aboard Amtrak to this day. later on the Strand became the last location of Lupo’s Heartbreak Hotel, and when i first got to play there all i could thing about was that i was making music on the same stage as my hero Johnny Cash had.

we’ve seen Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds a bunch of times, but two of those concerts were incredibly special. we were a bit late to see Cave as he’d been around throughout the 1980s and ’90s when we both liked his records, but for some reason we never saw him until 25 March 2013 at the Orpheum Theater in Boston during the ‘Push The Sky Away’ tour. by this time i had become really good at online ticket buying and had scored us really good aisle seats in the orchestra section, but we were still maybe 10 or so rows back. the Mrs. did what we all try to get away with, spreading out into the aisle, dancing, swaying and such. she was wearing this sparkly dress we now call the Nick Cave dress, so maybe the light hit her just right and he noticed her. maybe it’s ’cause she’s so darn pretty. anyways, usually an usher would’ve ushered here right back to her seat, but before that could happen Nick Cave beckoned her to come forward to the stage. seeing the opportunity i followed and found a spot nearby her, where we were able to stay for the remainder of the concert. we weren’t sure if we ever needed to see another Bad Seeds show as this one was so amazing, but we were hooked, and then 5 years later on 26 October 2018 we not only were in the front row for his show at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, we actually got invited up on stage with the band for a few songs near the end of the concert. friends of ours recognized us on the stage’s huge video screens. that was a night we’ll never forget.

the two of us became fans of Beach House through our then-relationship with Sub Pop Records as we carried their releases at our shop What Cheer
on Thayer Street. and while we were late to discovering their music, we became huge fans of them through their album ‘Depression Cherry’ and worked a label promotion to build excitement for their stop at the Strand / Lupo’s on 25 April 2015 where we first saw them live, but it was their 24 August 2018 show at House of Blues in Boston that really won us over — they had built their live sound and visuals up considerably since we first saw them, and it was so huge and beautifully sonic.

while we’ve never actually seen Roxy Music proper, we did see Bryan Ferry at the Wang Theatre in Boston, where he played many of both our favorite solo songs and ones by Roxy Music on 5 August 2019. and while tickets are getting harder and harder to both afford and acquire in these days of the Ticketmaster / Live Nation evil empire, i got extremely lucky for this concert and wound up with affordable 2nd row seats.

like many of our friends back in 2001 we went to see and fell in love with a movie called Amelie. it’s such a magical film. but it also turned us into fans of the musician / composer Yann Tiersen who did the soundtrack. he was someone we assumed we’d never see perform live, but turns out he tours fairly often these days and seems to like playing Boston, which, at just an hour away, is a city we often wind up going to see shows. we’ve seen Tiersen twice there, first at the Sinclair in Cambridge on 1 June 2014, where he and his band played a thick, hazy, sonic and shoegazey show based on his wonderful current album ∞ (aka Infinity). we later saw another performance of his at the Berkeley School of Music in Boston where the performance was just as good, but this time more experimental and complex. both were really something.

The Cure is a band that Jennifer aka DJ-JD had seen a few times back in high school, but i never had the opportunity until they surprised the world by touring and soon released new music again. we went to see them on 18 June 2023 at Great Woods in Mansfield, MA., a really nice outdoor ‘shed’ venue situated in groves of tall old trees. it would be an incredible venue if it weren’t for how unbelievably terrible traffic and parking always is there, so we normally skip seeing shows there, but for the Cure we went for it and are glad we did. it began with some gothic tailgating in the afternoon, and the band’s 3 hour show seemed impossible for musicians in their 60s. they played songs from every era of the Cure, in addition to some new songs we later recognized in their 2024 album ‘Songs Of The Lost World’ which is incredible. not things you’d expect from the late career of a band that became best-known in the 1980s.

we’ve taken many road trips over the years, and that’s where we may’ve listened to the most music together, first on cassettes, then CDs, and now the unbelievably easy world of streaming, but i do miss those days when you’d have one CD or cassette that was so good you’d just leave it in the car’s player and listen to it over and over and over again. these days there are just too many options. back in the late 1990s we started listening to Sigur Ros and it was 2005’s ‘Takk’ that didn’t leave the car stereo for a really long time. it was also a constant roadtrip soundtrack. our first time seeing Sigur Ros was 14 May 2006 in Boston at the Bank [of the moment] Pavilion. they make / invented dreamy Icelandic alternative music that was further enhanced by the mist and chill in the air that day. also their minimal but effective use of scrim / shadow lighting as their only stage decoration turned the setting into the band’s own thing. nothing fancy, but very moving.

our record collection has always run deep with artists from other times, and getting the chance to see them has been tricky, but we have been so unbelievably lucky in this respect, like being in the right place at the right time to see Ray Charles perform 25 June 2003 at the Montreal Jazz Festival. And then there was the time we saw Annie Ross and Jon Hendricks of the 1950s group we love Lambert, Hendricks & Ross circa 1999 at a small jazz club (Scullers ? Regatta Bar) in Boston. we also saw Jon Hendricks performas part of Sound Sessison in Providence at Waterplace Park on 6 July 2008.

and while they don’t really book the actual real music legends so much anymore (it’s mostly cover bands now), we treasure seeing both Loretta Lynn (August 12th 2007), and George Jones (September 25th 2006) before they passed away at Indian Ranch in Webster, MA., an old campground with a stage right on Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagaugchaubunagungamaugg. we even camped out in our late-1960s Serro Scotty camper trailer for the Loretta show. and we’ll never forget seeing Willie Nelson on 12 August 1995 at “The Tent” aka Warwick Musical Theater in Rhode Island. we’ve seen Willie several other times, but sometimes seeing an artist you love in an old historic venue makes for the most special and memorable setting for a concert.

and last on this list is the Pharcyde, a 1990s California hip-hop band we NEVER thought we’d get the opportunity to see, but on our wedding anniversary, 9 August 2006, we saw them at one of our favorite places on Earth, the Ocean Mist, in Matunuck, RI. this beach bar usually has cover bands for college kids play their stage, but on occasion they’ll book Reggae legends. but hip-hop? not usually. but we just happened to be taking a special Anniversary vacation down in Matunuck and couldn’t believe our luck — the actual Pharcyde were playing ON our anniversary. so we paid the cover charge and entered a thick cloud of weed smoke for one hell of a show. to this day their album ‘Bizarre Ride II’ is a favorite of mine, so its song “Oh Shit” ends this program.

in 2023 i released an album with my band the ‘Mericans called ‘A Tribute to Providence’ a free 20 song album of covers of Providence and RI bands from 1987-2013 representing 20 years i’d spent in Rhode Island. the songs were either chosen because the artists i found influential or inspiring, music that i felt others should hear. these songs are largely by my friends, the ones who, over the years, made me fall in love with Rhode Island and its always incredible music scene, so me and the ‘Mericans covered twenty different songs for the project, but i have always wanted to share all of the original versions of these songs, so for the first time ever, here they are!
