‘Red’ signals the return of Mark Cutler as a solo artist (with the help of many gifted friends including co-producer Emerson Torrey). A gifted guitarist and award-winning singer/songwriter from Providence, Rhode Island, Mark continues to add unique entries to the great American songbook and leads a variety of roots-rock bands. He spins tales about men who drink alone or hover over a lover. He sings stories about ghosts, midget wrestlers, walking in the woods, walking in the night, being remembered, just being alive and getting used to this. Like the character Travis Bickle, Mark will ‘play anytime and anywhere’ and sometimes he’ll show up alone with his guitar and sing for you whether you like it or not.

Crotchthrottle is an enigma wrapped in a mystery stuffed in a taco, and deep fried in inscrutability. Details on the precise band line-up and history are hazy, but Jeremy Withers (of The Inclined is somehow involved. Some have said that this is his attempt to cash in on the recent abstract noise-drone boy-band trend, while others claim he is a mere studio lackey controlled by the shadowy Heiemeier Axia. Whatever the facts may be, the music is clearly the product of a deranged mind (or possibly a malevolent hive-mind) bent on hypnotizing the youth of America with repetitive “motorik” rhythms, constantly shifting drones, odd song structures and studio-manipulated melodies.

Coma Coma’s “Live at Jakes” is filled with the raw, yet complex sound that one has come to expect when listening to this band. A quick follow up to their debut EP, the improvised guitar solos meld seamlessly with a pulsating rhythm section that explores their sonic landscape, while the organic vocals give the songs direction. Recorded live at the late, lamented Providence venue in December 2008 by Jeff Bright from Sambello Studios.

Two-and-a-half minutes of frentic synth noise, back with a thick, fuzzed out slab of shoegazer drone-pop. Farfisa, harmonium, and mellotron shimmer and swirl around a raucous mess of drum loops and guitar, smothering a couple pure pop gems in a sea of distortion. Michael Bond and Matt Dennewitz fulfill their usual duties in this electronic duo, with GD Mills from Fuck Knights filling in on drums. Self-recorded in a bedroom and practice space in Ukrainian Village, Chicago. The seven inch single will be available in late March from the Data Was Lost label. This CD version contains two bonus remixes of tracks from “Songs About Music” by You, You’re Awesome and Superaction80.

New Bedford, Massachusetts’s The Diggers show incredible range on their self-titled debut album. From 16 plus minute epics to groove laden jams to I just can’t contain myself rockandrolla, The Diggers have something to prove with their left field way of thinking. Recorded by themselves in the depths of the Wamsutta Mill, The Diggers are finally taking their (mostly) instrumental madness to the masses. Influences include: Led Zeppelin, An Albatross, Neil Young, Pink Floyd.
